Nehalem Mac Pro – Where’s my credit card?

Posted by: Albee In: Geek|Mac

Apple have released the Intel Nehalem-based Mac Pro (finally) and it looks pretty sweet. Before I destroy my credit to possess one of these beauties, I figured I’d read a review over at Ars Technica:

Prepare for ludicrous speed: Ars reviews the 8-core Mac Pro

No way I can justify one of these – maybe if I win the lottery. I’m waiting for the Nehalem iMac…

I wish I had thought of this….

Some enterprising teenagers in Maryland have found a way to send speeding tickets to their enemies. Send these kids to Harvard!

Wireless Update – WPA hard to crack

Posted by: Albee In: Geek|News Items

There was a scare a while back when someone supposedly found a quick way to crack WPA passwords. Well, it turns out that as long as you use a strong (read random and lengthy) password, it should be fine.

Read on….

ArsTechnica has a piece about a security company’s study showing that there is a significant (read 3-day) lag time between when new threats are released onto the internet and when most anti-virus programs are able to detect them. This definitely reflects my experience – for my clients AVG, Norton/Symantec, and McAfee were helpless in the face of the AntiVirus2009 onslaught (read more here).

Anyway, the short version is, be careful what email attachments you open and where you surf….

How Green is your IT? Ask GreenPeace!

Posted by: Albee In: Green IT|News Items

GreenPeace apparently keeps track of how green tech companies are in their annual review.

Their site lists the following criteria:

“The ranking criteria reflect the demands of the Toxic Tech campaign to the electronics companies. Our three demands are that companies should:

* clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances;
* takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete.
* Reduce the climate impacts of their operations and products.”

Here’s the list – there are a few surprises:

It looks like presidential communication via email is public property – so these guys say he may have to give up his Blackberry.

The very notion of this happening to me makes me suicidal…. Of course, I have an iPhone, so I am a much more reasonable handheld addict.

My new computer came with a virus! Bummer!

Posted by: Albee In: Geek|News Items

OK, I didn’t really buy one, but you can’t be too careful these days. Apparently these new computers are shipping with a virus pre-installed. Is it a feature or a benefit? Read on…

About This Site

Having spent many years doing IT for non-profits (and small businesses) I have my finger on the pulse of cheap IT - what's the most powerful and cost-effective use of technology for cash-strapped organizations? That is the question I am constantly trying to answer.

I created this site as a place to post the various geeky tidbits and strange happenings that I come across in my daily traversing of the web, with a focus on (b)leeding-edge IT for non-profits and small businesses.

My hope is that you, the reader, will find some humor, entertainment, usefulness or irritation at what you find here. If so, you are my intended audience.
